Sir John Redwood has urged Lord Cameron to make clear he now believes in Brexit.

The former prime minister made a sensational return to frontline politics yesterday when Rishi Sunak made him Foreign Secretary in his reshuffle.

But Sir John insisted Lord Cameron, who stood down as PM and quit as an MP after losing the 2016 referendum, should say how “proud” he is of Brexit Britain.

He also urged the Foreign Secretary to pinpoint Brexit freedoms to use to boost the UK’s “global reach and influence”.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Wokingham MP said: “David Cameron should reassure that he supports the 2019 manifesto to get Brexit done.

“He needs to set out how proud he is of the UK now we are free of EU law and taxes.”

In a further post, the Brexiteer added: “David Cameron should identify all the Brexit freedoms we can use as he develops the UK’s global reach and influence.”

Sir John’s intervention comes after Downing Street insisted Lord Cameron believes in Brexit.

No 10 said the Prime Minister is “looking to the future” as it defended making the ex-PM Foreign Secretary despite his previous opposition to the UK’s departure from the EU.

The Prime Minister’s press secretary said: “We’re at a point now where we are looking to the future, we’re not looking to the past as a party.
