Astonishing footage has captured the moment fur seals fought back against a great white shark who was about to make them it's lunch.

The prey turned the tables on the predator, which can grow up to around 20-feet long, as Sir David Attenborough presented BBC One's Planet Earth III. In the episode that aired on Sunday, October 22 at 6.15pm, the beast was filmed swimming through the water towards a herd of tiny fur seals.

The seals risk their lives every time they go to eat in the ocean but in recent years, they've developed a behaviour to protect themselves from one of the great white shark. But while it seemed like the group of adorable seals had no chance of defending themselves against the ultimate ocean predator – they banded together to banish the beast from shallow waters.

In the clip, which has gained more than 10,000 views on YouTube, the mob of seals gathered together to chase the shark back out into the deep ocean off the coast of South Africa — and it worked. Describing the seals rebelion, David Attenborough said: "Together they turn on their enemy.

"As more join, the mob grows in both number and confidence. The tables are turning. By sheer force of numbers, these fur seals drive the world's most notorious predator back out to sea."

Viewers were left stunned by the bravery of the seals as they found the footage of the shark "terrifying". One user said: "That first clip of the great white is terrifying."

Another added: "That's crazy!! But good!!" A third commented: "Strength in Numbers." A fourth wrote: "Magnificent."

A fifth hailed it one of their favourite moments of the series – despite it just barely starting. They wrote: "Even though we yet to see the rest of the episodes this is one of my favourites out of the others that are yet to come and this scene was one of the best moments along with the lions hunting the seabirds and maybe the seal that got eaten didn’t see the shark coming and seeing the seals chasing the great white away reminds me of when buffalo defends them selves from lions."
