Beachgoers were shocked at the sight of a bin lorry that half disappeared into the ground after being swallowed up by a massive sinkhole.

A council worker had reportedly been inside the vehicle when the tarmac beneath it caved in. He was said to have been left "shaken but unhurt" after the incident, which happened on the seafront in Rhyl, North Wales earlier this morning.

Hundreds commented as jaw-dropping pictures emerged on social media with many speculating about what could have caused the collapse. A cordon has now been put in place around the hole and the incident is now under investigation.

An eyewitness told North Wales Live: "The sinkhole is absolutely massive. The entire right (driver's) side of the bin lorry was in the hole above its headlight – such was the depth the vehicle had sunk down."

Bryn Edwards from Rhyl watched as the truck was recovered by an ex-Army off-road vehicle belonging to a local recovery firm. He said: "It was a shocking sight. You couldn't see half of the bin lorry because it had been swallowed up by the ground.

"The local recovery firm, LNS came along with an ex-Army Foden 6×6 that went down onto the beach alongside the truck before using a crane to winch it out of the hole.

"I think the council had been emptying bins and the truck was parked there before it suddenly sank. The driver got one hell of a fright. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, just shaken from what I heard."

A Denbighshire County Council spokesperson said: "The council is aware of an incident which involved one of its refuse collection vehicles on the promenade in Rhyl this morning. The area has been secured with barriers and there is still safe passage for pedestrians.
