She said: \u201cWhat I would say is that we are facing unprecedented levels of illegal migration, not just in the UK but also in countries like the US and other Western or European nations.<\/p>\n
“It’s right that we ask for greater collaboration at the international level amongst like-minded partners and, ultimately, the UK cannot sustain such levels of illegal migration or, indeed, legal migration.<\/p>\n
“It’s indeed the prudent thing for political leaders to call this out and take steps to address it.”<\/p>\n
Responding to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees denying any need for reform of the treaty or refugee definitions, MS Braverman said it is \u201clegitimate to ask these questions\u201d.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cUltimately, I think it’s legitimate to ask these questions, whether the definition of refugee in the international conventions is still fit for purpose, whether the definition of persecution has been stretched beyond a reasonable limit, and that’s in the face of these high numbers that we are now seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

More info<\/p>\n She added that the Government is \u201cmaking progress\u201d with its Rwanda deportation plan, which is currently making its way through the latest round of court appeals.<\/p>\n This afternoon historical evidence emerged to suggest Ms Braverman\u2019s demand of reforms to the UN Refugee Convention are similar to those calls made by historic government, including Tony Blair\u2019s.<\/p>\n In 2000, three years into Sir Tony Blair\u2019s Government, Labour\u2019s Home Secretary Jack Straw pressed for a “complete revision” of the Geneva Convention on refugees, which would introduce a \u201ctwo-tier system to cut the flow of asylum seekers\u201d being smuggled to Britain.<\/p>\n Mr Straw wanted to agree an internationally recognised list of \u201csafe countries\u201d from which Britain and other EU countries would not generally consider asylum applications.<\/p>\n Reports at the time said the Labour Home Secretary wanted to \u201cspark a Europe-wide debate about placing the Geneva convention on a \u2018more rational basis\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n Nine years later, Labour immigration minister Phil Woolas reignited the same debate, which now attracts such hatred when raised by Ms Braverman.<\/p>\n Mr Woolas said: \u201cThe Geneva Convention was intended to protect individual people from persecution.<\/p>\n \u2018A significant number of people who claim asylum are doing so for broadly economic reasons.<\/p>\n \u201cSo I think it is right we look at the framework, as indeed other European countries are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
