A childless woman has been denied IVF treatment on the NHS because her husband already has kids.
Despite having nine miscarriages during their four-year marriage, Kelsey Carnall, 31, from Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, was told she must pay for fertility treatment because hubby Jack has a son and daughter from a previous relationship.
The couple were told last Christmas their only hope to build a family of their own was through IVF, LeicestershireLive reports.
"I love Jack's son and daughter to bits and would do anything for them but I'm not their mum.," Kelsey said. "They have a mum.
"It's heartbreaking to be told I am not childless. I don't have children. I have appealed the decision but they just sent me a copy of their guidelines.
"It feels worse because of everything we've been through."
Since they started trying for a family in October 2017, Kelsey has had numerous miscarriages and a rare ectopic and heterotopic twin pregnancy, which resulted in emergency surgery to remove one of Kelsey's fallopian tubes as well as the unborn children.
Kelsey then received a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome, further reducing her chances of being able to conceive naturally.
The NHS receptionist said: "We will have to fund it all ourselves and it's going to be about £15,000.
"But we want to have a child of our own to add to our family."
All they need is enough money in the bank to have confidence they will be able to complete the process and they have set up a GoFundMe page to raise £2,500 to get them started.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is when an egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory.
It comes after the “world’s oldest mum”, 75, was forced to raise her twin one-year-olds alone after her husband died.
Yerramatti Mangayamma gave birth to the girls through IVF in 2019.
