Woman dies after getting head trapped between car and parking pay machine

A woman died after her head became trapped between her car and a payment machine.

The tragedy unfolded in Columbus, Ohio, USA, with security footage showing the woman, identified as Victoria Strauss, exiting the garage when she dropped her card while attempting to pay.

As she opened her door and reached down to retrieve her card, the 23-year-old accidentally accelerated, according to the Columbus Police Department.

The vehicle collided with the payment kiosk, trapping Ms Stauss' head between the car door and the door frame.

The shocking incident happened on Monday night but the police were not called until Tuesday morning when a security guard reported it, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Strauss was reportedly from Florida originally and a graduate student at Ohio State University where she was studying social work.

She had been leaving the parking garage at around 11.30pm on Monday night.

Columbus Police said in a statement: "On 01/18/2021 at approximately 7.37pm, Ms Victoria Strauss (23) of Columbus, was exiting the parking garage located at 45 Vine Street.

"While attempting to pay for her parking, she dropped her card. She attempted to retrieve her card by opening the her door and leaning out to pick it up.

"She inadvertently accelerated and collided with the parking kiosk. The collision pinned her between the car door and the frame.

"Ms Strauss died as a result of the collision with the kiosk and was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was involved. The Accident Investigation Unit responded and initiated an investigation, which is ongoing."

One online commenter wrote: "Prayers to her family, such an awful accident."
