Two tourists dead and Brit wounded in rival drug cartel gunfight at Mexican bar

Two female tourists have been murdered and three people left wounded after a shooting at a bar in Tulum, Mexico sparked by rival drug dealers.
The tragic victims were at the bar, known as La Malquerida, in the popular tourist resort when the assailants began shooting on Wednesday evening at 10.40pm.
So far, one of the shooters, José Antonio Lira Pérez, 24, has been arrested after CCTV footage placed him at a local medical facility, where he was being treated for a wound following the incident.
According to local media, the gunmen were chasing after Lira Pérez, who sought refuge in the bar as the assailants shot at him.
Local digital media outlets Las Noticias de Tulum and Noticias Pedro Canche identified India nationals Jennifer Itenzold, 35, and a woman named Angeli, as the fatal victims. Angeli's name and age are unknown.
UK national Maicol, 32, was wounded during the incident, along with Evan der Kooij Eline, 21, from Holland, and Anima Gandaf, 27, from Germany.
A preliminary investigation by police indicated that the brutal attack was the result of a feud between drug dealing groups that operate in the popular resort town.

The Mayor of Tulum, Marciano Dzul Caamal, Tweeted on Thursday: "I strongly condemn the tragic events that occurred last night in Tulum in which two people lost their lives and three others were injured."
One of the women was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and the other died a short time later at a local hospital.

The three surviving victims who were wounded were rushed to hospitals in the area to be treated.
This shooting is the second deadly bar attack to take place in Tulum in the last six weeks – despite the fact that the destination has become increasingly popular among international tourists during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Customers at the Rosa Negra bar had to seek cover on the evening of 11 September when a group of armed men aboard a motorcycle fatally shot a local taxi driver One of the bullets struck a security guard during the incident, who also died.
