A toddler had died after being mowed down outside a school in an alleged hit-and-run.

The girl who is thought to have been three-years-old, was reportedly at a zebra crossing by The Olive primary school in Birmingham, West Midlands, when she was killed.

A silver Ford Galaxy which allegedly struck the child at around 2.40pm on Thursday, is said to have continued driving.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested following the collision, in which the girl was hit by a car on Reddings Lane in the Yardley area just before 2.40pm on Thursday.

She was taken to hospital but died. Police say she was with her family at the time she was hit.

Acting Inspector Paul Hughes, of the serious collision investigation unit at the force, said: "The tragic death of such a young child is deeply saddening. Our thoughts are with the girl's family at this incredibly distressing time.

"Our priority is supporting her family and ensuring that a thorough investigation is carried out. We understand the shock and worry this may have caused the community and ask people not to speculate on the circumstances.

"I'm keen to hear from anyone who was on Reddings Lane or the immediate vicinity and may have witnessed the collision or heard anything that may assist our investigation."

A child's scooter could be seen near a pedestrian crossing, where a series of yellow evidence markers were placed.

A spokesman for West Midland Ambulance Service confirmed: "We were called at 2.38pm this afternoon to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands air ambulance critical care car, and the Midlands air ambulance from Cosford.

"On arrival, we discovered one patient, which was a child. They were treated for serious injuries and taken to Birmingham children's hospital by land ambulance."

A witness said on Facebook: "It wasn't a racer. It was a seven-seater and sadly the girl passed.

"Prayers and thoughts to the girl's family."
