Stalker threatened to ‘set up tent’ and stay outside ex’s mum’s house

A desperate stalker threatened to pitch a tent outside his ex's mum's house after she moved there following the couple's explosive split.

Barry McCarroll, 28, bombarded his former partner with messages and even started using a banking app to try and change her mind.

He was spared jail at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Monday, reports the Daily Record.

The Scottish court heard that McCarroll's ex, Rachel Fraser, dumped him in April 2021 — but was not able to stop him when his methods for contacting her grew more bizarre.

Self-employed roofer McCarroll started sending payments of small penny amounts to her account, entering messages into 'the reference' field to attempt to persuade her to take him back.

Prosecutor Sarah Smith shared that McCarroll and Miss Fraser had been involved in an "on-off" relationship for the best part of 10 years before the final break-up.

Ms Smith said: "At the beginning of April she terminated the relationship and advised him that she wished to have no further contact with him.

"Between the 20th and 23rd of April he sent her a number of messages, during which time she repeatedly asked him not to.

"On one occasion he advised that he would pitch a tent outside Miss Fraser's mother's address, where she was residing at that point.

McCarroll, pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of conduct causing fear and alarm to an ex-partner, which is commonly referred to as 'stalking'.

Defending McCarroll, Solicitor-advocate Martin Morrow said: "He thought if he was able to talk to her, he could talk her round.

"He was just trying to save the relationship, and she was upset because she couldn't quite get him to get the message.

"When the police became involved, the message was received. Nothing has happened since."

Sheriff Christopher Shead told McCarroll had caused Miss Fraser undue fear and alarm, and sentenced him to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work.
