Jeffrey Dahmer's dad has died in hospice care at the age of 87, health bosses in the US have confirmed.

Lionel Herbert Dahmer spent the last few decades of his life defending his serial killer son, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1992. Also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, the younger Dahmer murdered and dismembered 17 men between 1978 and 1991 and even ate or mummified the body parts of his later victims.

Lionel Dahmer's death was confirmed to the US Sun by an employee at Medina County Health Department today (Tuesday, December 5). His cause of death has not yet been publicly announced.

The news comes less than a year after Lionel was widowed by his second wife Shari, who died at the age of 81 of heart problems. She passed away on January 13, 2023, in a nursing home in Seville, Ohio.

Lionel took up residence in the village, which had a population of less than 2,500 people in 2021, after his son's murderous rampage was exposed. The devoted dad stood by Dahmer even after he was murdered in prison in 1994 at the age of 34.

The pair's close relationship was even laid bare in the controversial Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, released in September 2022. Lionel has also spoken candidly about his bond with his son and even told the harrowing story of how he once nearly opened a box containing the remains of one of his eldest child's final victims.

"So when I made the visit to Milwaukee, I saw this box in the closet in his room and I said 'I'm going to open it,' and I started going down to the basement to get a tool to open up the box," Lionel said in a Dr Phil interview featured on the FOX Nation documentary My Son Jeffrey: The Dahmer Family Tapes. "He kept complaining that he couldn't even have one foot square of property to do with what he wants and I said, 'I'm gonna open it up anyway, find out what's in here,' because I thought it was something related to pornography.

''I said, 'What would you have done Jeff if I had opened it?' And he said something like, 'The jig would have been up.'"

A young Dahmer would even practice taxidermy with his dad. As a child, the killer was reclusive but would play up to the character of the class clown at school, the Daily Star previously reported.

One of his favourite pranks included pretending to have seizures, which became known among his classmates as "doing a Dahmer". Some fellow students enjoyed his stunts so much they dedicated a fan club to him – but when he committed his crimes, his peers were universally shocked.

John Backderf, author of the comic book My Friend Dahmer, said: "Suddenly all the goofball antics and silly things we’d done became completely sinister and troubling."
