Ukrainian forces are battling Russian troops for control of Enerhodar, which has Europe’s largest nuclear plant, the city’s mayor said.
The mayor of Enerhodar announced the alarming news after Russian military forces took control of the territory surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
The plant holds six of the country's 15 nuclear reactors, sparking concerns over the safety of the plant as well as its workers who could be at risk.
“The situation in Ukraine is unprecedented and I continue to be gravely concerned,” the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi said in an emergency meeting today.
“It is the first time a military conflict is happening amidst the facilities of a large, established nuclear power program.”
