A rare 3.2-magnitude earthquake in the UK has left residents of Birmingham "terrified" after they heard loud rumbling.

The tremor on Monday night had a depth of 10km and struck 7km northwest of the city at 10:29pm, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The rumbling was so loud that it woke some people who were trying to get to sleep.

One surprised person in Walsall in the West Midlands said: "We were just getting into bed and thought there had been a crash or explosion near by.

"Confused by the rumbling we checked in doors and went to make sure all okay outdoors. Five of our neighbours were out there too, quite confused by the whole thing."

In the nearby town of Willenhall another resident revealed that it stopped them getting to sleep, and revealed: "I was in bed just nodding off to sleep and felt the house shake. I thought it was someone trying to get into the house."
