The Queen made an “incredible” choice to challenge Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after their controversial Oprah Winfrey interview, a royal commentator has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their shock departure from the Royal Family in early 2020, and a year later, the pair's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey aired.
During the televised chat, the couple made a number of allegations against the royals, including a shock claim that an unnamed member of the family had made comments about the colour of their son Archie’s skin.

Soon after the show was broadcast, the Queen shared a response, and royal commentators have hinted that this represented a radical step while contributing on a Channel 4 documentary, The Real Windsors.
Victoria Newton, The Sun’s editor, suggested: “The Queen then put out a statement, a considered statement, I think it was two days later saying, ‘recollections may vary’.
“To comment on something like that is incredible, and she was essentially saying that Meghan and Harry aren’t telling the truth about everything, and that’s quite a statement.”
Royal historian Robert Lacey agreed that the Queen’s speedy statement had been a radical move and added: “She expressed always her personal sympathy as a grandmother with what her grandson was going through and was complaining of.
“And then the statement also made clear what the royal rules said: you’re either in or you’re out.”
Harry and Meghan returned to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with the monarch in June this year, but were not publicly reunited with Prince William and Kate Middleton amid rumours of a fall-out.
This clash appeared to reach a climax when Harry alleged that his brother is “trapped” within the royal institution during the chat with Oprah.

Since then, the once-friendly brothers have only appeared together once in public, when they attended the unveiling of a statue honouring the legacy of their late mother Princess Diana.
Despite this reported rift, William and Kate sent well-wishes to Meghan recently as she celebrated her 41st birthday, sparking a furore among fans.
In a tweet from their social media account, which was accompanied by a picture of the ex-royal, the Cambridges said: “Wishing a happy birthday to the Duchess of Sussex!”
