Vladimir Putin’s propagandists have pounced on baseless Nord Stream theories, including that the UK is behind an act of sabotage. A drop in pressure on both Nord Stream One and Two was registered earlier this week, after which explosions were detected.

The European Union said it believed the damage was caused by sabotage, but has not named a specific suspect.

A blame game was triggered almost immediately after foul play was suspected, with most commentators tentatively point their fingers either towards Russia or the US.

A leading Russian propagandist has, however, added a new name to the draw, suggesting Britain could have been involved in the blasts.

Channel One Russia presenter Olga Skabeyeva suggested “there are a lot of coincidences” regarding the UK’s activity in the area of the pipeline.

Skabeyeva has been nicknamed Putin’s ‘Iron Doll’ propagandists.

She told state-run TV channel viewers: “If you look at the military activity in the bombing area, there are a lot of coincidences. Watch your hands, as they say.

“On the morning after the explosion, a report came to the White House that British scuba-diving exercises were going on for the third day right next to the Nord Stream.

“The same day London rewarded them for some kind of combat merit in carrying out… an important exercise in foreign territorial waters, whatever that means.”

Skabeyeva did not provide evidence for her claims.

She is reported to have remarked that there was “no proof” the British were behind the bombing of the pipelines but that this was “highly likely”.

The Kremlin leader himself has also accused the West of being behind the destruction.

In a speech to mark the annexation of four Ukrainian regions invaded by Russia, he said: “The sanctions were not enough for the Anglo-Saxons: they moved onto sabotage.

“It is hard to believe but it is a fact that they organised the blasts on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines.”

Commentators have brought attention to threatening comments from Joe Biden ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He said in early February: “If Russia invades… again, then there will be longer Nord Stream Two. We will bring an end to it.”

Asked how he would do that, the US President responded: “I promise you we will be able to do it.”

Other US officials echoed his remarks.
