PETA embarrassed after ‘turkeys wouldn’t eat us’ claim proves to be false

Animal rights activists have been slammed online after posting a bizarre vegan message that was proven to be false.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) made a Thanksgiving post via X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday to try and warn people off eating turkey for dinner. The post included a cartoon image of turkeys dressed as humans sitting around a dinner table and giving thanks to food, which included a roast human.

They captioned the post: “We’re lucky turkeys would never do this to us – you don’t have to do it to them, either.” While the pro-vegan group thought this would give followers feelings of empathy, people were not impressed and clapped back at the organisation with corrections on their post.

A community note appeared under the post, reading: “Turkeys are not vegetarians. Turkeys eat mice, lizards, frogs, and just about anything they can fit in their mouth. If turkeys were larger or had the technological means to farm and eat humans, their current diet reveals they likely would.”

The note even included research from the University of California’s Integrated Pest Management to back up the correction. After PETA was rubbished, others jumped on the bandwagon and offered more ridicule.

One user replaced the roast human image with an image of a roast turkey. They captioned the post: “Don't worry, I fixed the image for accuracy. Turkeys would happily peck a thanksgiving turkey to the bone. Sad but true. Maybe you can help raise awareness of poultry on poultry violence and the risk of cannibalism.”

Another added: “Turkeys don't because humans are apex predators, and are too large for them to effectively hunt. Frogs and lizards, on the other hand, are well within their capacity to hunt.”

More and more users added their thoughts to the thread. One said: “The only reason they don’t eat us is because we’re top tier predators. They sure as heck would eat us if they could.”

American political strategist Scott Presler wrote: “Do you ever post about how many birds are killed by wind turbines?”

PETA has yet to respond to the corrections and comments on their post. However, several social media users thought the thread would reach internet fame. “Best community notes ever?” one added. “PETA got community noted and it's one of the best” another said.
