Musk compares Russia’s war in Ukraine to ‘WW1’ as ‘people dying for no gains’
Elon Musk has compared Russia's war in Ukraine to 'WW1' while claiming "so many people dying for no gains".
The Tesla and X CEO was responding to a post on his own platform, formerly known as Twitter, which detailed the ground that had been gained by both warring nations. The post by @cremieuxrecueil, linked to an article in the NY Times, was captioned: "This is a great way to see just how much nothing has been happening in the Russia-Ukraine war."
In the article is a map showing a colour-coded border running between the nations, highlighting the areas captured past their respective frontlines. The story was headed: "Who's gaining ground in Ukraine? This year, no one."

Responding to the piece the SpaceX CEO wrote: "So many people dying for no gains, just like WW1."
The NY Times piece talks about both sides launching ambitious offensives, but the front line has barely shifted. It adds that after 18 months of war, a breakthrough looks more difficult than ever.
"The front line in Ukraine changed little last winter. Russia aimed to capture the entirety of the Donbas, but it only inched forward," the article reads.
"Ukraine has made minimal gains in its counteroffensive. Dense Russian minefields and fortifications have made every attack extremely costly.
"Despite nine months of bloody fighting, less than 500 square miles of territory have changed hands since the start of the year. A prolonged stalemate could weaken Western support for Ukraine."
By comparison, in WW1 the German strategy in 1914 was to first defeat France, then transfer forces to the Russian front.
However, this failed, and by the end of 1914, the Western Front consisted of a continuous line of trenches stretching from the English Channel to Switzerland.
The Eastern Front was more dynamic, but neither side could gain a decisive advantage, despite costly offensives.
By the end of the war between 15-22million lives had been lost from all nations involved.
Although reports vary wildly, the Russia Ukraine War claims up to 500,000 lives have been lost.
