Mexico’s most powerful cartel has slaughtered several of El Chapo’s soldiers, including a high-ranking commander.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel [CJNG] has asserted itself in the state of Chiapas, which offers key arms and drug smuggling routes into neighbouring country Guatemala.
Suspected CJNG members opened fire on Sinaloa Cartel soldiers in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez on Wednesday, July 7, in front of horrified eyewitnesses.
Ramon Rivera, a Sinaloa Cartel plaza chief in Chiapas, was among the five people killed, Mexico News Daily reports.
He was said to be travelling with his bodyguards before they were shot at point-blank range.
Carmen Villa, head of the Citizens Security Observatory in Chiapas, said: “My reaction [to last Wednesday’s attack] and perhaps that of bystanders was very naive.
“Many were filming the shootout, many people didn’t believe what was happening… I don’t know what is worse – not having the preparation to react or to get used to [cartel violence] and know what it’s about.
She added: “It was definitely something extraordinary and sadly I believe it won’t be a one-off experience.”

Los Cirilies, an armed group linked to the gang, also blocked roads in the municipality of Pantelho and announced curfews, Infobae reports.
At least nine soldiers were injured during armed attacks.
The CJNG, led by Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, has rapidly expanded across the country and operates in at least 35 states across Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Its members – trained in elite military tactics – carry out brutal acts of violence to intimidate their rivals.
Earlier this month, Mencho’s daughter Jessica Oseguera was jailed for 30 months in the US for illegally running his tequila and sushi businesses.
Robert Almonte, a former US federal marshal who spent 25 years in El Paso’s Police Department tackling narcotics, claims her imprisonment may pose an issue for the CJNG.

He told the Daily Star: “I do believe that the light sentence given to El Mencho's daughter has made the CJNG vulnerable, especially El Mencho, since he is the most wanted Cartel leader by the US.
“There is no doubt that the US government was able to take advantage of her arrest and plea deal to get information from her that would make the CJNG and El Mencho more vulnerable.”
However, the CJNG has not let up in its war with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by El Chapo until his imprisonment in 2019.
