A man who was blinded by a vicious attack when his ex-girlfriend poured sulphuric acid over him says he suffers from insomnia and has nightmares years on.
Daniel Rotariu, 35, was sleeping when Katie Leong threw the acid on him in the bed they shared.
He recalls having an argument with Leong, 52 around the time he went to sleep, before waking up to the excruciating pain.
He told the Nottingham Post: "It was 10-20 seconds maybe, in that moment I believed that I am dreaming until the pain started to kick in.
"I said 'what is happening?' It was so painful.
"I felt it in my mouth, the taste – the acid had a strange taste."
Within seconds, the sight in Daniel's eye became "foggy" and he started to panic.
Then when he jumped out of bed and tried to get out of the room, his other eye stopped working too.
Leong was arrested and later found guilty of attempted murder for the sick attack. She was jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 17 years.
Since the attack Daniel has found love again with his wife Anna, who he married in Romania where he grew up.
The pair now have a son, David, and live in Nottinghamshire.
"The best day of my life was when David was born," he said.
But despite finding happiness, Daniel is still haunted by the horrific attack.
He said: "I can't pass one day without swearing at Katie for what she did.
"I do have nightmares sometimes – not every day but I do. It's hard to forget about what happened."
He also described suffering from insomnia because he can no longer work as a tool maker and spends all day at home.
Since the attack, Daniel has had several skin grafts and also had a prosthetic eye fitted.
More recently, he has gone under the knife to put pigmentation in his scalp, which gives the impression of hair.
After the surgery, Anna said: "I am just so happy that he's feeling much more confident with himself."
