A man has been stabbed to death in the street in broad daylight – with police reportedly then evacuating a Tesco store "in search of an alleged suspect".

The tragic incident took place in Woolwich New Road, Woolwich, London, with the victim being attacked at 5.25pm, MyLondon reports.

Bystanders desperately tried to save the victim, although their efforts tragically ended up being in vain.

Photos from the scene show members of the public holding up sheets in front of the victim to allow paramedics to work.

A police tent and cordon have been set up, with the whole road closed off by officers.

Armed police were seen running towards a nearby Tesco store which was subsequently evacuated, with reports that a suspect was inside.

In a tweet, Greenwich MPS of London's Met Police wrote: "Officers are at the scene of a fatal stabbing on Woolwich New Road.

"A crime scene remains in place. At this early stage there have been no arrests.

"Please call 101 ref: 5748/05Jul with any information."

London Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
