A blaze which ripped through a multi-storey car park at Luton Airport last night (Tuesday, October 10) was caused by a diesel car, officials have revealed.

Fire crews were called to the Bedfordshire hub shortly before 9pm after being alerted about the inferno, which destroyed some 1500 cars. Images posted to social media showed smoke billowing into the air as the flames tore through the car park, the Daily Star previously reported.

Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said in the wake of the incident: "We have no intelligence at this stage to suggest that this was anything other than an accidental fire that started in one of the vehicles that had not long arrived at the airport.

"It was not an EV (electric vehicle). This was a diesel-powered vehicle."

The fire broke out on the third floor of the newly-built, multi-storey Terminal Car Park Two. Four firefighters and one airport employee were rushed to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. Another firefighter was treated at the scene.

The fire also caused chaos for holidaymakers with flights suspended and travellers warned not to come to the airport. Flights are not expected to resume until at least 3pm today.

Luton Airport said last night: "All flights are currently suspended as emergency services respond to a fire in Terminal Car Park 2. Access to the airport is currently restricted and we ask that people do not travel to the airport at this time."

Hopkinson said fire and rescue teams first received a report of the blaze at 8.47pm. Its first two appliances arrived at the scene just under 10 minutes later.
