A missing woman last seen at the summit of Ben Nevis yesterday morning is now the subject of an urgent police search.

Sarah Buick, 24, was on a solo trip to the UK's highest mountain before vanishing, with the authorities warning it was highly unusual for her family to hear nothing from her for so long.

Police Scotland said: "Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses that can assist in tracing Sarah Buick in the Lochaber area.

"Sarah is a keen walker and was last known to be, as pictured at the summit of Ben Nevis at 5am on June 22.

"However she may have moved on to other locations within the area.

"If you have sighted Sarah at any time on or after June 22 please contact the police straight away."

Buick posed for a 5am selfie on the Highlands peak on Tuesday morning, adding the caption: "Good morning from Ben Nevis!"

The Dundee woman is feared to have possibly been caught out by the mountain's notorious weather.

Ben Nevis's 1,345m peak hit lows of -1C this week, with winds around 30 km/h.

Fort William Inspector Nick Hough added: "As time goes on we are becoming increasingly concerned for Sarah.

"She is an experienced walker and often makes trips alone, but it is very unlike her to be out of contact with friends and family for this length of time.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Ben Nevis or Glen Nevis area over the last 36 hours and has seen anything which may help our searches to please get in touch."

Inspector Hough explained she had walked from the Lower Falls area of Glen Nevis toward the peak and may have returned on a similar route.

Police said she is around 5ft 3 and of slim build with long brown hair.

Northern Scotland's police tweeted a photo of Sarah and urged locals to call 101 if they have any information about her whereabouts.
