Gran left with horror injuries after ‘sickening attack’ at funeral wake

A gran-of-12 was left with horrific injuries after an alleged attack at a funeral wake.

Belinda Stickland suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and facial injuries as a result of an incident at the Splott Conservative Club in Cardiff on Friday (June 9).

The 62-year-old had only been at the venue for 20 minutes and was stood at the bar talking to a man when the attack took place, her family said.

Belinda's daughter, Jinaise Joseph, said she had been paying her respects to her best friend's late partner when events took a sour turn, Wales Online reports.

A 37-year-old woman has since been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Jinaise said: "I wasn't there but I got a phone call and I could hear my mum saying 'help me, help me'.

"There was going to be a long wait for the ambulance so some of the staff at the club helped us get her to hospital.

"When we got to the hospital I couldn't go into the room. It was just horrendous.

"She is such a well-loved and well-liked person and the attack happened so quickly. I don't know how anyone could do this to her. Someone who has seen the CCTV footage of what happened said it was sickening and shocking."

Belinda remains in hospital and police have spoken to her and are viewing CCTV of the incident.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "A 62-year-old woman from Rumney is being treated in hospital for her injuries and enquiries are on-going."

In a further statement, they added: "A 37-year-old woman from Llanrumney has been arrested on suspicion of an assault at the Splott Conservative Club on Friday night."
