Denver ranked 6th best beer city in the country, study finds — The Know
December 11, 2020
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of people have turned to a trusty frosty glass. According to a Chicago-based market research firm, IR beer sales in the United States rose about 16% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2019.
For those in Denver who have partaken in a pint or two, you’re among the best-suited in the country. The website SmartAsset found the Mile High City is the sixth-best city in the nation for beer drinkers.
Taking 384 cities in the country, they measured the following: total number of breweries, breweries per 100,000 residents, the average number of beers per brewery, bars per 100,000 residents and the average price of a pint.
The top five cities were:
St. Louis, Mo.
Portland and Denver were the only two cities with populations above 400,000 in the top 10. Denver stood out for having 80 breweries, the second-highest total in the batch of cities analyzed. It’s a whopping 11 breweries per 100,000 residents, which places the Queen City of the Plains 16th best in that metric. The only thing holding the city back was the average price of a pint being $5, more than the average price of $4.59 across all the cities in the study.
Denver was joined in the top 50 by four more Colorado cities: Fort Collins ranked 12th; Colorado Springs, 24th; Boulder, 38th; and Loveland, 45th.
Like many industries, it’s been a hard year for Colorado breweries. More than 20 have closed so far, including Denver’s Thirsty Monk Brewery, Declaration Brewing Company and Alternation Brewing Company.
