Chris Watts’ mistress ‘applies to change name’ two years after he killed family
October 17, 2020
The mistress of murderer Christopher Watts has applied to change her name two years after he pleaded guilty to killing his own family.
Nicole Kessinger has begun proceedings to change her name after she was made famous by the case that shocked America and the rest of the world in 2018.
Ms Kessinger helped police with their investigation when she revealed she had been having an affair with 35-year-old Watts – who murdered his pregnant wife and two daughters.
Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke declared the information that 32-year-old Ms Kessinger provided in her statements as being a “bombshell”.
Watts is currently serving five life sentences after he pleaded guilty to killing wife Shanann Cathryn Watts, who died aged 34, their four-year-old daughter Bell, three-year-old daughter Celeste, and son Nico who was killed as a 15-weeks fetal death.
It has been reported he and his wife Shannen had an argument the night she was killed in which he confessed to having an affair, prompting his wife to declare she would seek full custody of their children.
He is said to have strangled her to death in an act of cold blood – and was interrupted by their four-year-old daughter as he was wrapping his wife’s body with a blanket.
As his eldest child asked what he was doing, he then took her and his second daughter and strapped them in to the back of the family car, loaded the dead body of his wife in the boot, and drove to an oil field.
He is said to have smothered daughter Celeste with her favourite blanket, and then also smothered Bell to death after she tried to escape.

He buried his wife’s body in a shallow grave and dumped the bodies of his daughters in an oil well.
Watts went on to report all three missing, gave interviews where he pleaded with his family to return home, and even texted his wife’s phone asking her to return as part of a ruse to cover his tracks.
The Mirror reports Ms Kessinger turned to the police on hearing of the crimes to help as much as she could.
She stated: "It's not fair. It wasn't fair to me in the first place, it wasn't fair to her in the first place, it wasn't fair to any of us in the first place.
"It wasn't fair to his family for him to have an affair, it wasn't fair to me to have him lie to me and make me think that everything is going to plan. And still to this day, I don't even know what's a lie and what's not.
"It's like, you know, I'm gonna wake up every day and know that like this mom and her unborn child and these two little girls are not around anymore and it breaks my heart."

According to the Daily Mail, Ms Kessinger applied to change her name in Jefferson County, Colorado – with a hearing set to happen on Thursday.
The Watts family murders have been the subject of a Netflix documentary called American Murder: The Family Next Door.
The 1 hour and 22 minute documentary was released last month on the streaming service, receiving positive reviews from critics.
In August 2018, Watts confessed to killing his wife Shannan by strangulation, and smothering his two daughters with a blanket.
He made a plea deal and was sentenced to five life sentences—three consecutive and two concurrent—without the possibility of parole in November 2018.
He was sentenced to an additional 48 years for the unlawful termination of Shanann's pregnancy and 36 years for three charges of tampering with a deceased body.
Ms Kessinger features in the documentary where she told police that Watts said his marriage was over and she claimed she had no idea his wife was pregnant.
While naked images of her were found locked inside a password protected app on Watts’ phone.
It is believed Ms Kessinger spent two hours speaking to investigators following the shocking murders, and she came forward with information after ending her relationship with Watts due to “lies” he had been telling her.
