China has faced criticism and scrutiny from world leaders for their response to the coronavirus crisis. Asia political expert and author Gordon Chang argued that China is intentionally lashing out at other nations. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Chang argued President Xi Jinping wanted to prove to the world it was strong, despite being weakened by coronavirus.
He added China’s President Xi Jinping idolises Chairman Mao Zedong for his attitudes towards the rest of the world.
Mr Chang said: “Even before the coronavirus pandemic we saw supply chains trying to reduce their vulnerability to China.
“Now I think that process will accelerate as it has in recent months and it will continue.”
“Especially as we come to the conclusion that China is a malign actor.”

Mr Chang also reflected on the position China is putting the Western world in with continued strained relations.
He said: “This is not just a question of what we, America or we Britain want to do.
“It is about what China is doing and right now their diplomacy is extremely provocative and belligerent.
“They talk about wolf-warrior diplomacy in China, well, that is what we are seeing right now.
“We are seeing threats to invade Taiwan, the boat bumping and other incidents involving Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malasia.
“For God’s sake, the clashes with the Indian military and interference and internal affairs of other countries.
“And the inappropriate comments made by Chinese ambassadors.”
Mr Chang accused China of driving the end of diplomacy between international powers during the health crisis.
He continued: “Diplomats have given up on diplomacy and that is exactly what has happened and China is driving this right now.
“So regardless of what we want, this is not up to us, it is China forcing other countries into a position.
“As this occurs we will see less and less trade with China and the rest of the world.”
Mr Chang closed by saying: “Xi Jinping has made it clear that he idolises Chairman Mao.
“Mao’s view was that when you are weak you lash out at everyone and that is what China is doing.”
