Boy, 8, shot and killed by dad after gun he was cleaning went off in accident

An eight-year-old boy has tragically died in the United States after his dad left his gun loaded while cleaning it.

Jack Bennett was shot and killed in a heartbreaking accident after the gun his dad was cleaning went off and killed the boy.

Distraught mum Tammy Snyder said Jack had ironically asked his mum if he could watch the Nightmare Before Christmas before going to see his dad.

The child watched on as his dad began to clean the weapon at home in Canton Township, Michigan before the gun fired.

Ms Snyder said the incident was a "freak accident" and was supposed to be an "unloaded gun" that her husband was doing maintenance on.

She said: "It was a freak accident. It was supposed to be an unloaded gun and my husband was just doing maintenance cleaning on it like he normally does.

"There wasn’t supposed to be any rounds in it or anything like that."

Ms Snyder and her husband rushed the boy to hospital but doctors could not save him.

Tammy said both she and her husband are "crushed and heartbroken" about the loss of their little boy, who was their only child.

Police have since arrested the boy's father and are reviewing evidence before deciding whether to make a case against the child's dad.

Attorney Terry Johnson, who specialises in gun safety and criminal defence, has said accidents can lead to serious charges.

Johnson said it is important to make sure guns are properly unloaded every time you clean them.

Jack was a student in Wayne-Westland School District and counsellors were on hand for students and staff.
