Boy, 11, woken by ‘gunshot’ sound when B&M lava lamp ‘exploded while unplugged’

A boy has been left too scared to sleep at night after being woken by a "gunshot" sound when his "unplugged" lava lamp exploded.

The 11-year-old's furious mother is now urging people to get rid of B&M branded lava lamps after the explosion in her son's bedroom allegedly damaged £1,800 worth of gaming equipment.

Corley Osborn was fast asleep when he was woken by a "gunshot"-like sound caused by the lamp, a birthday present that had only been used twice, on Sunday night (July 3).

Mum Deborah Costellow, 29, said she heard screams at 11.40pm and jumped into action with her partner Louis Osborn.

The mum-of-two told LeicestershireLive all plugs were switched off around the house before bedtime, due to her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and that the lamp was last used at 10pm.

She said after a couple of hours of being in bed they heard the explosion followed by screams and ran to Corley's room to investigate.

His mum and her partner, discovered their son in bed, looking "terrified", and crying at the state of his room.

His computer, VR headset, games consoles and equipment worth £1,800 were all reportedly damaged by the wax that was "red-hot" to touch.

Deborah said: "We turned the light on – the lava lamp had exploded everywhere.

"And he is scared to go sleep at night.

"I'm just grateful he wasn't sat at his desk when it happened, if he was – it would've been a completely different story."

The family claim the £14.99 lamp was only turned on twice before its demise and immediately logged a complaint with B&M.

She said: "All I will say is if you have this item – bin it."

A B&M spokesperson said: "We're currently waiting for the customer to return the lamp so we can investigate further."
