Boris to fly home from COP26 on a private jet despite his climate warnings

Boris Johnson faces being accused of hypocrisy for deciding to fly home from COP26 in a jet, despite telling everyone else they should let the train take the strain.

His decision is likely to lead to howls of protest from campaigners, who have already highlighted how many of the rich and famous have been ignoring their own pleas to cut down on high-carbon-emitting modes of transport.

Downing Street said the PM’s time was more important than the optics of being seen to do the right thing, reports the Sun, and he’ll be leaving Glasgow on a chartered Airbus plane that will chuck hundreds of tons of carbon into the atmosphere as he heads back to London.

Boris’s office said his flight’s emissions would be offset, although they didn’t explain how, and they said the measure was essential due to the PM’s “significant time constraints”.

But even though they insisted the jet would be using eco-friendly sustainable aviation fuel, it’s still thought it will produce up to seven times more emissions than if he took the train back down south instead.

More than 100 world leaders arrived for the make-or-break climate conference in Scotland on private jets, prompting scorn from activists who said they were failing to lead by example.

Joe Biden has already come under fire for using as many as 85 petrol engine cars in his motorcade.

The American president’s huge convoy was shown being escorted along a motorway on the way to COP26 after he flew across the Atlantic.

And some campaigners are fuming that the 78-year-old president and his team are staying in Edinburgh during the conference, meaning that the convoy will be travelling between the two cities several times during his stay in Scotland.

Meanwhile, other high-profile figures have also been criticised for failing to heed their own advice on the environment.

At the weekend, two of the world’s richest men partied on a yacht off the coast of Turkey, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos flying to Bill Gates’s bash by private helicopter.

Bezos is one of those thought to have subsequently flown to COP26 by private jet.
