Carol Kirkwood reminded BBC Breakfast viewers that daylight savings would take place on March 28 for people to move their clocks forward. But the weather presenter said the weather would still be cold despite British summertime staring. Western regions of the UK would be hit with showers and winds with some areas seeing snow and sleet.

Ms Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast: “For the next few days we’re looking at sunshine and showers but Friday it’s going to turn that bit colder.

“And we’ll see some snow mostly on the hills but in some of the heavier bursts in the north, we could see a little bit of sleet at lower levels – that won’t last though.

“Now what we have on Thursday is a weak weather front which is sinking southwards and taking cloud and patchy rain with it.

“It’s a cool start in the south but a bright one but that will change through the day.

“Out towards the west some thicker cloud that’s going to produce some showers, it is already, and they’ll continue on and off through the day and equally there’s a lot of dry weather.

“And the winds easing overnight in the north and just a gentle breeze in the south – so 14 degrees will feel quite pleasant.

“As we head on through Thursday evening and overnight maybe some early showers but by the end of the night some heavier rain will start to push in across western areas.

“Temperature-wise, we’re looking at four in Aberdeen to eight in Plymouth.

UK weather: Met Office issues thunderstorms warning

“As we head through Friday we’ve got this band of rain coming in from the west which is going to be pushing steadily eastward through the day and behind that we see the colder air.

“Sunshine and showers but the showers, especially on higher ground, likely to be wintry.

“They mentioned some of those could get down to lower levels at times.

“It’s likely to see some wintriness on the hills of Dartmoor as well.

“So a lot going on with the weather in the next few days.”
