PMQs: Boris Johnson slams SNP over Brexit ‘policy’
The Scottish Government has warned new changes to customs and exports following Brexit could cost the UK up to £7billion each year, while Scotland’s Constitution Secretary Mike Russell has predicted the country’s GDP could plummet by as much as six percent over the next decade. The SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford has said Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party “must apologise to Scottish businesses and pay compensation to Scotland for the long-term damage they are doing to our economy – costing us billions in lost trade and growth”.
But Scottish Tory constitution spokesman Dean Lockhart quickly pointed out that the SNP had already received “hundreds of millions of pounds” from Westminster.
He claimed the SNP is “sitting on more than £700million of additional Covid business support funding” they have received from Chancellor Rishi Sunak, adding “not a single penny of this has yet been delivered to firms struggling massively from lockdown restrictions”.
Now former Labour MP Mr Galloway, who is heading up political campaign group Alliance 4 Unity in the fight to destroy the SNP’s Scottish independence dreams, has launched a furious attack against the demands from Scotland’s ruling party.
He said the UK Government has already given Scotland “billions of pounds” to help with the financial impact from both Brexit and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic ripping through the country.

Mr Galloway claimed several businesses have yet to see any of the huge sums of money being sent from Downing Street to Holyrood, warning the SNP to quickly divert its priorities elsewhere as Scotland continues its fight against the Covid pandemic.
He told Express.co.uk: “These are just provocations that Ian Blackford regularly mounts.
“The SNP wants to turn the rest of the UK against us so Brit politicians will speak or act in a mean way, and thus increase the tension that exists.
“They are following a strategy of tension, and it is a very dangerous one.
“The rest of the UK has already given billions of pounds to Scotland for Brexit and for coronavirus.
“A big question in Scottish politics is: Where is the money? Show us the money!
“There is evidence without limit of businesses that have waited for money that has been sent to Edinburgh from London.
“There is certainly no case whatsoever for bellyaching about the support from the UK to Scotland in this difficult time.”

When making the demands for compensation from the UK Government, the SNP’s Westminster leader Mr Blackford had described Brexit as “an unnecessary act of economic vandalism, which has been inflicted against Scotland’s will”.
He said: “It is completely unforgivable that Scotland is being forced to pay such a devastatingly high price for Boris Johnson’s extreme Tory Brexit deal, with mounting costs, red tape and disruption.
“The Tories must apologise to Scottish businesses and pay compensation to Scotland for the long-term damage they are doing to our economy – costing us billions in lost trade and growth.
“This disastrous Tory Brexit was a completely unnecessary act of economic vandalism, which has been inflicted against Scotland’s will.
“It is now beyond doubt that the only way to protect Scotland’s interests and our place in Europe is to become an independent country.
“With businesses, industries and communities across Scotland warning of rising costs, bureaucracy and delays, it is clear Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal has already left the UK poorer and worse off – with absolutely no benefit to Scotland at all. Every promise has been broken.”
He added: “The UK Government must now provide an urgent multibillion (pound) package of compensation to Scotland to mitigate the lasting Brexit harm done to Scottish businesses, industries and communities.
“Scotland has been completely ignored by Westminster throughout the Brexit process.
“People in Scotland have the right to determine our own future, protect our interests, and regain the full benefits of EU membership as an independent country.”
