Douglas Ross told Good Morning Scotland’s Gary Robertson that the UK Government has protected jobs throughout Scotland during the coronavirus pandemic. The Scottish Tory leader hailed the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s decision to extend furlough until September 2021.
Mr Robertson said: “Given there is concern about a tsunami of unemployment, isn’t it time for you to have a word with your friend the Chancellor regarding continuing furlough for much longer than is being planned at the moment or bringing in replacement support?”
Mr Ross replied: “Well, the last time I was on with you Gary, you asked me would I support the furlough being extended to September and I assume the Chancellor was listening to your robust questioning because he extended furlough to September.
“That is something, you and others were calling for, so I think we have seen throughout this pandemic that the UK Government has protected jobs right across Scotland.”
The Good Morning Scotland host interjected: “But you have just made the point that this is going to go on long past September.”
The Scottish Conservative leader responded: “Yes I know but 930,000 jobs have been protected through the furlough scheme and the self-employed income support.
“So we are seeing those schemes benefitting people and we hope that the majority of those stay in work but we have got to look at alternative schemes for those who sadly lose their jobs.
“I think this support to retrain and to get people back in employment is the right way to direct our resources going forward.”
