There has been widespread outrage at the small pay offer to nurses who have been working on Covid wards for the past year. Sir Keir Starmer has descirbed it as an “insult” to Britain’s “NHS heroes”.

In the Commons, Mr Johnson is likely to face anger from MPs at the decision not to offer a higher pay rise.

Labour is demanding the amount be more than doubled to at least 2.1 percent, arguing the Government’s offer will result in a pay cut in real terms due to the predicted rise in inflation.

Health workers are the only public sector workers set for a pay rise next year, with the Chancellor announcing a pay freeze for other professions in light of the pandemic.

The Prime Minister has defended the amount offered to nurses saying it is what is affordable in the current financial circumstances.
