Nicola Sturgeon could be forced to resign “in the not too distant future” over the ongoing SNP crisis. The SNP has descended into bitter internal rows over their Scottish independence strategy and the ongoing inquiry involving former First Minister Alex Salmond. Michael Blackley, political editor of the Scottish Daily Mail, also suggested that a backlash over the SNP’s pro-EU stance was growing.

Mr Blackley told talkRADIO host Kevin O’Sullivan: “The EU is an interesting issue.

“Their official position is that the SNP want to be in the EU.

“However, there is a sizeable minority in the SNP that don’t want that idea of being ruled by Brussels.

“In their view, it would be giving up getting ruled by the UK and instead being ruled by Brussels.”

He continued: “Nicola Sturgeon would like you to think the party was completely united on that view but that is not the case.”

Mr O’Sullivan followed up: “It is doesn’t seem to be a very united party at all.

“So, it isn’t fanciful to suggest that it’s potentially possible that in the not too distant future, Nicola Sturgeon may have to resign?”

Mr Blackley responded: “It is absolutely possible. Right now, Sturgeon’s popularity ratings are pretty high.

“They think she has done a fairly good job at presenting herself during the coronavirus pandemic. Admittedly, she has made all the same mistakes the UK Government has made.

“However she has presented herself very well. But this issue with Salmond could be a resignation matter.”

George Galloway has also claimed that Ms Sturgeon’s days “are numbered” with the internal rows leaving the party “in tatters”.

The pressure ramped up on the Scottish First Minister this week when an SNP grandee called for a “revolt” to be launched against the current party leadership amid rising internal tensions.

Jim Sillars, former deputy leader of the SNP, warned there must be a change in the party’s leadership as soon as possible.

The former Glasgow MP warned “time was short” for a change of leadership and called on the SNP’s ruling body, the National Executive Council (NEC), to make the necessary changes.

Mr Galloway told that the SNP is “tearing itself to pieces,” adding that the damning verdict from Mr Sillars shows more than ever “the end is near for Nicola Sturgeon”.
