Boris Johnson shock as ex-PM beaten by two others in poll for next Tory leader

Nigel Farage has topped a poll on who should be the next Tory leader, with Suella Braverman second and Boris Johnson third.

The Express asked readers who they thought should replace Rishi Sunak as he faces a crisis over the Rwanda scheme.

As of 6pm yesterday, more than 5,000 people had voted in the survey on this website.

Mr Farage, the former Ukip and Brexit Party leader who is currently taking part in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, came first with 41 per cent despite not currently being a Tory member.

Mrs Braverman, who was sacked as home secretary last month and has come out against emergency legislation on Rwanda, was second with 22 per cent.

Mr Johnson, who was forced out of No 10 last year following a series of scandals, came third with 14 per cent of votes.

Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt came fourth on 11 per cent after rising to prominence with her sword-wielding role during the King’s Coronation.

Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch was fifth on three per cent, while Lord David Cameron – who made a sensational comeback as Foreign Secretary – was just behind on two percent.

Five per cent said it should be another name not listed in the poll, while two per cent were unsure.

It comes as turmoil over the Rwanda scheme has laid bare Tory divisions and led to speculation over whether some in the party would like to see a change in leadership.

But Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden yesterday insisted it would be “insanity” to hold another leadership contest.
