Amazon remove shoes from sale after David Lammy MP highlights n-word description

Amazon has removed a pair of shoes from sale after they were described on the website as “N*****-Brown” in colour.

Labour frontbencher David Lammy highlighted the racially offensive description as he asked: “Is it 2020 or 1720?”

The Tottenham MP shared a screenshot of the product’s Amazon page on Twitter and urged the website to “take it down”.

“Just buying brown brogues tonight leads to this racist micro aggression,” he added.

The “formal” lace-up shoes were being sold on Amazon by a retailer known as “Floren”.

After their removal from the website, Mr Lammy later thanked Amazon for their action.

But he also asked: “Given the item has been on sale since March what systems do you have in place for reviewing descriptions and not allowing offensive terms to be posted in the first place?

“This is not the first time.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account.
