A beautiful little village in Europe has been thoroughly investigated after around a third of its population were found to be more than 100 years old.

Of those that have passed the century milestone in the Italian village, about twenty percent are said to be 110 – despite the fact researchers found almost nobody to be “actively exercising”.

The team were looking into the longevity phenomenon in Acciaroli, southern Italy, and suspect it has something to do with good genes and good diet.

During a podcast about their discoveries, Alan Maisel said that “everybody ate anchovies” – and “they seem to eat it with every meal”.

Another big part of their diet was a particular type of herb – as Mr Maisel added: “They have rosemary in almost everything they cook with. Whatever form they put it in has been shown in scientific studies to reduce and prevent cognitive dysfunction and some ageing.”

A key part of their lifestyle is seemingly their ability to simply be “relaxed” all the time.

The researcher confirmed that during evenings and throughout the afternoon, residents sit around in the “cantinas”, enjoying wine and coffee.

A key piece of data found unusually good blood circulation for their age – levels which would be found in people in their 20s and 30s – and they point towards the diet for causing this.

There was also a distinct lack of chronic illnesses like heart disease, obesity and Alzheimer’s.
